Chill place, great coffees and fast service! High recommendations.
Great breakfast place, owner of the famous " "mancake" the very large pancakes which were featured on man vs food I believe. The service is great and this place is awesome for a late night breakfast dine in. Has that old school diner kinda feel. A true breakfast gem, fantastic hollandaise sauce btw!
"There Is No Sadness That Cannot Be Cured By Breakfast Food" - Ron Swanson"I like to eat breakfast alone, and almost never before noon; anybody with a terminally jangled lifestyle needs at least one psychic anchor every twenty-four hours, and mine is breakfast." - Hunter S. Thompson I prefer to eat with company, but the Stepping Stone Cafe has a great Norman Rockwellian counter when you are a party of one...
Tofu "scramble" was completely inedible. It was just soggy vegetables topped with tofu croutons. Would've rated 1/5 stars but the service wasn't bad and I enjoyed the tea and biscuit.
Excellent breakfast! Eggs, sausage links, potatoes and the huge mancake were all tasty! Great service and friendly staff, too!
Really fantastic throwback to old school cafe. The burger was really good that I had. The biscuits and gravy were fantastic. Definitely going to make my way back there I don't know why I haven't been going there for years.
I had the chicken fried steak with sausage gravy and fries. It was delicious. I haven't had sausage gravy in a very long time and this one was really good. The over easy eggs were cooked perfectly. The service was perfect and friendly. Whole restaurant was really clean. I didn't give it 5 stars because the food didn't beat the chicken fried steak I had in Texas and the price of the meal was too high.
Best Corned Beef Hash I have had in a loooong time with eggs and hollandaise to boot. Lovely location, friendly service.
Eggs benedict w gravy on my hashbrowns....n a bloody mary 4 dessert😎🍹🍹🍹🍹😍
Breakfast is served all day. Chicken fried steak. Awesome little diner. Very happy with this restaurant that we stumbled upon.
You need to pop in here!!! Fast friendly service, plenty of jokes, and great food. Portion size is huge so come hungry!! Mancakes are monstrous and fluffier than down pillows. Absolutely brilliant food.
Amazing food and great down to earth atmosphere.
Wow what a great experience!! The food was delicious, the service was Perfect and the restaurant itself has the cutest atmosphere. I loved it!
The food here is well made and tastes very good. The servings were huge, so they can easily be shared. We had man cakes, the cinnamon French toast, biscuits and gravy, and the smothered badass. I would not hesitate to have any of them again. We had appetizers of onion rings and the Cajun tots. You can’t go wrong with fried food here.
This is a really fun place to eat. Good food, good prices and a nice staff. I love all the kitschy little things to see and the little figures that drop from the ceiling when the door opens. The "mancake " is a ginormous pancake that fills an entire plate! You wouldn't think a pancake that big could be light and fluffy, but it is! The biscuits are wonderful and they have amazing marionberry jam on every table. If you are in the Nob Hill area and want to have a great breakfast or lunch, definitely check them out.
I simply love this place. Vintage mom and pop diner, yummy comfort food, and fantastic decorations including floating action figures attached to the door and move when its opened! 😂
I really should be writing two separate reviews, but I'm a little too lazy. 5 stars to the employees -- because every time I have been there, they have been so accommodating and respectful, ESPECIALLY the guy who works evenings -- unsure of his name. 3.5 stars to the cafe as a whole -- I love the food generally and they have great coffee, I also LOVE that they are open till 3 am on Fridays and Saturdays. BUT my problem is that they are only open till 3 am on Fri/Sat. Their closing hours are a bit all over the place which is bothersome because I can never remember the hours... Wish they were more consistent and closed later every night. That is the only reason I am giving this place 4 stars instead of 5.
Arrangement of outdoor tables is good. Staff hasn't figured out how to deal with the larger space, however. They are slow (even accounting for the larger area they have to cover) while at the same time they end up having two, sometimes three, people doing the same task. If you like eggs Benedict don't get it here. The omelets and scrambles look good and I have heard, but do not know from personal experience, that the pancakes are good. At the risk of being repetitive, incredibly slow service.
Quirky but excellent comfort food, including among the most massive, excellent pancakes (mancakes) you can find. Good service, solid menu with quality choices and great prices. Never fails us.
Amazing food, good coffee and fluffy mancakes
WOW...1st time here and it was fantastic. Watching the "mancake" arrive for the table is a true experience.
Loved it must stop when in Portland
Nice neighborhood diner and breakfast spot
My favorite Portland restaurant. I've taken 2 busses and walked to get there and never been disappointed.
This place is a legendary pdx location. Loved this place since the 90's. Oh ya I'll be back. So good.
Food is pretty good. Mancakes are huge. Menu says hashbrowns, but they are fried potatoes which were very good. They were fried with bacon so nice touch. Place is small but very interesting. Waitstaff was very friendly and service was pretty quick.
Not much sadness that a mancake can’t cure and there’s bottomless coffee for what those can’t inure.
Great food, super friendly staff, enormous pancakes dubbed "mancakes". Not the cheapest spot but the food is well worth it. May be a bit of a wait during busy hours.
I’ve never had a bad experience here, which is saying something since they are consistently jam-packed. I might have to wait for a table or an occasional coffee warm up, but the wait is worth it and their success well-earned.Plus, watching people gaze in wonder at the Christmas ornaments “magically” dropping and rising is great entertainment for when I’m alone or the conversation lags...
Horrible. Frozen fruits.Canola oil fried smelly hash brown (which didn’t even look like it) Absolutely avoid unless you have low standards for food.
Excellent place for brunch! I could eat breakfast to my heart's content while my husband could indulge in lunch. The Italian Scramble was delicious even without cheese (plenty of umami with sun dried tomatoes). And my husband would order the club sandwich a second time.
Great place for pancakes and other local specialities. Pumpkin mancakes/pancakes and seasonal and only available for late part of the year for limited time. Staff is attentive and prices are reasonable. plus they serve local Portland beer for very reasonable price.
Diner vibe. Friendly staff. We ordered the chicken fried steak (which my husband liked), but the mac and cheese I ordered was so thick, not creamy like I expected. I would probably order something else next time. Not too many vegetarian options unless you pay extra to sub a veggie patty for a hamburger or sandwich.
I have to say I was a little let down. The pancakes are huge but they don't taste very good. The atmosphere was pretty nice and they had a lot of neat things to look at but as a restaurant I feel the food could have been a lot better.
A very local diner, gets a good crowd. They do a good basic breakfast. Know for their mancakes, which is a large pancake.
I was pleasantly surprised how great the service was, was a very busy location however, we did not wait to long for a table. The friendly staff made everthing even better. I had a Reuben that was made with fresh corn beef, my husband had a Greek salad and vegetarian chili.
What can I say? I love Stepping Stone - the quintessential neighborhood cafe, with a little bit of snark thrown in. Fine food, too!
When you are in dire need of a damn good cup of coffee and a serious flapjack, this is the place. Come earlier than anticipated and signing that list on the clipboard outside by the door should be on your first agenda. I haven't had any complaints on the wait here, it is worth every minute. The menu has every breakfast fix you could think of and the coffee just keeps on coming. You'll love it. ☕🥞
This was hands down the best Chicken fried steak and eggs I have ever had in my life. Would highly recommend you check this place out if you're in the NW area !
If you’re looking to get comfort food in Northwest Portland but not break your bank, then Stepping Stone Cafe is the place for you. Super quirky Portland vibe, funky art (albeit a little on the strange side), bottomless coffee for $2.75, and comprehensive assortment of dishes including all day breakfast. The menu items range from $6 for a short stack (beware even the two pancakes that come with this are the size of the plate) to $11 for eggs benedict. It’s very busy on a weekend morning or afternoon, and it may take a moment to get seated. The wait staff was very friendly, although it took a little for the food to be brought out - likely due to the crowd. Another thing to be aware of is that the place isn’t great for large groups of people, since there is a first-come-first-serve bar, and the other tables comfortably seat up to 4 people. For those with late night weekend munchies or drunchies, they’re open til 3am!
Got the BFK coffee which was great, the perfect amount of stong with flavor. The chicken fried steak and gravy is delicious, filling and goes great with the house made biscuit. Friendly and quick service make sure everything is up to par, and it is! Affordable prices all around and as you read down the menu each thing looks as good as the last. My brother reports the pancakes are big!
I love this place, burgers arent anything special but it's a great place to spend time with friend late at night. Chris is a MVP, he works alone at nights and even when it gets crowded he is calm and nice. Been coming here for several years when ever my friends and I are hungry late at night and want a good milkshake and some breakfast foods
Food was good. I liked the burrito my friend got and also my omelet was really good too! I probably should have taken a picture before eating most of the food, but sometimes you forget. Worth checking out and staff was very friendly and accommodating.
A couple years ago a friend issued a challenge: eat the Smothered Badass in one go. It took several attempts but I have completed the task. I am now slowly exploring the breakfast menu and lament all the lost time I spent on my quest. This is a great local spot. The seating can get a bit tight and the kitchen can get bogged down by a rush but it's worth the wait.
Sometimes you just want to enjoy an old fashioned, unpretentious diner experience. Stepping Stone delivers this experience, but also delivers high quality, delicious food. The slightly standoffish motto, "you eat here because we let you," is belied by the genuinely friendly staff. I wish I could go here every weekend!
Stepping Stone has been around for ages, so I recently revisited it out of nostalgia. It has a local diner vibe and friendly staff. The food was fine, but there are better options nearby.
A coworker told me about you. Well I must say the biscuits and gravy are awesome. The mancakes are absolutely good. The coffee was very good. Servers are very pleasant and very good at checking on you when you not chewing a mouth full of food. Thank you for making the surprise I had for my wife possible.
One of the best cafe’s in Portland. Consistently delicious!
Perfect Eggs Benedict! The service was amazing! Music was on point! A must eat at place!
